Chapter 31
But over the week that followed, Alex found herself plagued by Seth and his great intentions âto work things out.â
âHeâs driving me nuts,â she complained to Leonie, who maddeningly seemed to think it was actually quite romantic.
âWhy are you so convinced heâs not sincere?â Leonie asked when they met up for one of their by now regular lunches at the Crab Shack.
âBecause I know him, and I know damn well this isnât about us getting back together; itâs about him trying to mark his territory. You were right, you know. The Jon thing really rattled his cage.â
âPoor you, and poor Jon too. What are you going to do?â
âWhat can I do other than keep him at armâs length? Although not so much that he takes off again. I still need him to sign those papers.â
âI still canât believe he just let himself into your apartment like that,â Leonie exclaimed. âAnd the innocent face on him too, like it was all perfectly normal and heâd just been away for a couple of days.â She grinned. âYou really should have seen your face.â
Alex was still taken aback by his audacity. âMan, what is it with guys that they can be so damn clueless?â
At this, Leonie smiled tightly, and again, Alex wondered what this girlâs story was and whether there were even some hidden parallels with her own. Clearly Leonie too was dealing with something, that much was obvious, and while Alex was curious, she wasnât going to push it just yet.
She would no doubt spill her secrets in her own good time.
âSo where did he go afterward?â Leonie asked then. âI take it you didnât let him stay withââ
âAre you crazy? Of course I wasnât going to let him stay over. He was lucky I let him stay standing. Ooh, I never meant to hurt you, Alex. I just couldnât help myself,â she mimicked.
But Leonie smiled indulgently as if it was all very endearing, and again Alex wondered how Seth always managed to get on the right side of people. No, strike thatâthe right side of women.
âWell, I suppose he was correct about one thing,â Leonie ventured sheepishly. âBy sleeping with Jon, you are sort of even, arenât you?â
âCome on. Itâs not the same thing, and you know it.â Alex was frustrated that this had come up again. âI didnât go behind Sethâs back, at least not intentionally, so it wasnât cheating.â
And as things stood, she wondered how the hell she was going to broach all this with Jon. What would he think when he heard that her ex was back in town? Granted, from the outset, heâd probably be happy for her given he knew how hard Alex had been searching for him to get out of the marriage.
But he couldnât possibly understand the complexities and nuances of their relationship or indeed how goddamn infuriating Seth could be.
âI know, but from Sethâs point of view, it probably is the same thing? You know how pedantic men can be about these things.
